Control Systems Engineer -Thermal
About Verrus
Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.
Verrus is a developer of next generation, greenfield hyperscale data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite energy infrastructure (i.e. large scale BESS) through our proprietary technology. This allows Verrus to be a flexible resource to the grid, and provide grid services that facilitate interconnection and the effective procurement of power and carbon free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI/ML). Verrus builds and capitalizes its turnkey data centers deeply integrated with energy resources, providing significant advantages over traditional designs.
Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies as well as power & utilities, delivering GWs of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing billions of investment).
About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners
Verrus is backed by Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. With investment from Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology-enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. SIP believes that technology-enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.
Following years of research and in collaboration with the Verrus management team, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.
Role
Verrus is looking for candidates to serve as a Control System Engineer for the entire cooling system (chillers, air handling units (AHUs), coolant distribution units (CDUs) etc) in a Verrus data center. This is a full-time position based out of Verrus’ Mountain View or Los Angeles office.
You will drive the design, programming, and optimization of automation systems for our critical cooling infrastructure. Your goal is to develop an industry leading building automation system that will deliver the uptime to our customers while enabling the facility’s optimization to extract value critical to our business (such as compute capacity, minimize PUE, peak shaving for demand response, etc.). You are a systems engineer with an objective oriented mindset and will use simulation and experimental approaches to get the job done.
Responsibilities
Control Design
- Develop "Sequence of Operations" (SOOs)/control algorithms that govern chillers, AHUs(air handling units)/CRAH (cooling refrigeration and air conditioning) units, and CDUs (coolant distribution units).
- Work with controls integrators for the implementation of SOOs in PLCs to deliver a building automation system for Verrus’ data center
- Design and test "contingency scenario" SOOs so that cooling continues uninterrupted during events such as a primary component failure, power outage, loss of communication etc.
- Develop a simulation and experimental platforms based workflow to validate the control system design for production release.
System integration
- Develop and maintain interface specifications between control systems and external systems such as power management controls and SCADA.
- Select and specify instrumentation including sensors, transmitters, actuators, and control valves to meet system performance requirements.
- Configure communication networks using industrial protocols such as OPC-UA, Modbus TCP/IP, Bacnet etc
Commissioning
- Create commissioning and startup procedures for control systems deployment
- Lead the functional testing (Levels 1-5) of cooling controls for Verrus data centers.
Cross functional collaboration
- Partner with the Mechanical Engineering team to ensure alignment of control design with mechanical system performance requirements.
- Partner with the Software Infrastructure team to ensure proper integration between control systems and enterprise networks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years in control systems design and implementation.
- Leverages strong understanding of mechanical system fundamentals (heat transfer, fluid mechanics) and control systems(PID, linear systems etc) during design, validation and commissioning.
- Experienced in developing simulation(Matlab/ Modelica/Python etc) and experimental approaches for control system validation
Preferred Qualifications
- MS with 5+ years of experience or PhD with 2+ years of experience
- Experienced in hierarchical controls architecture of a complex physical plant and optimization driven control actions
- Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus TCP/IP, Bacnet etc) and network configuration principles.
- Programming experience with industry standard PLCs such as from Siemens, Rockwell etc
- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, IEEE, ISA) including networking standards (IEEE 802.3, TIA/EIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801) and experience with hyperscale infrastructure or large-scale industrial operations.
Compensation
The annual base salary range for this position in California is $150,000-$180,000. Salary is only one part of Verrus’ comprehensive compensation package, which also includes a discretionary bonus, equity, general health benefits and paid time off. Compensation is determined by multiple factors, including market location, and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
