Data Center Electrical Engineer - Power Electronics
About Verrus
Data centers should be valuable assets to their customers, the grid, and the local community such that we are able to give customers what they want, where they want it, while cities and utilities are actively seeking us to build in their region.
Verrus is a developer of next generation, greenfield hyperscale data centers that flexibly leverage its onsite energy infrastructure (i.e. large scale BESS) through our proprietary technology. This allows Verrus to be a flexible resource to the grid, and provide grid services that facilitate interconnection and the effective procurement of power and carbon free energy, and balance traditional and variable uptime workloads (e.g., AI/ML). Verrus builds and capitalizes its turnkey data centers deeply integrated with energy resources, providing significant advantages over traditional designs.
Verrus is led by industry veterans with experience at the largest data center development companies as well as power & utilities, delivering GWs of data center capacity across four continents in their careers (representing billions of investment).
About Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners
Verrus is backed by Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. With investment from Alphabet, Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, and Stepstone Group, SIP is a consolidated holding company that builds innovative technology-enabled infrastructure companies and projects that deliver positive social and environmental impact at scale. SIP believes that technology-enabled infrastructure will help to solve some of the world’s most pressing social and environmental challenges.
Following years of research and in collaboration with the Verrus management team, SIP formed Verrus to design, build, and operate the world’s most innovative data centers, leveraging unique technology to develop a scaled project portfolio that delivers significant financial, environmental, and innovation outcomes.
Role
Verrus is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrical Engineer focused on power electronics aspects of our novel data center design. You will be responsible for the "grid-to-chip" power path, integrating Power Conversion Systems (PCS) that manage energy flow between the utility grid, battery storage, and IT load at both Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) levels. Your recommendations will directly influence the electrical, control design and delivery/field deployment of Verrus’ grid-interactive data center with BESS and microgrid capabilities. You will also develop the roadmap of technology innovation for power conversion systems and influence the evolution of our data center design; incorporating recent progress towards 400/800V DC power distribution to AI server racks.
This is a full-time position based out of Verrus’ Mountain View, CA office.
Responsibilities
- Energy Storage Integration (BESS & PCS): Architect and specify Power Conversion Systems (PCS) for integrating Li-Ion battery storage at both Medium Voltage and Low Voltage levels.
- Power System Stability & Control: Analyze impedance interactions, resonance, and transient stability during PCS operation (eg. islanding, black start, grid faults, AI workload related load smoothing etc) informing PCS level control or physical parameter adjustments.
- System validation: Leverage simulations, hardware in the loop and power hardware experiments to validate PCS performance.
- Delivery and Commissioning: Work with Verrus engineering, supplier and construction partners to deliver BESS into our first data center and support commissioning activities before customer hand off.
HVDC System Design
- Lead the transition to 400V/800V DC distribution, ensuring seamless interoperability between BESS, SSTs, and server racks.
- Design protection coordination for high-energy DC systems, including DC arc suppression and isolation monitoring for large battery arrays.
Cross functional collaboration
- Work with controls team to ensure PCS control and communication requirements are captured in the overall control of the data center
- Work with product team to influence the product development strategy for future generation of AI servers
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (MS EE) with power electronics focus
- Deep understanding of PCS architectures (2-level, 3-level NPC, T-type) and their control (Grid-following vs. Grid-forming)
- Hands-on experience with high-power laboratory testing (100kW+)
- Ability to translate complex electrical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years in power electronics
- Mission-critical environments experience (data centers, hospitals, or semiconductor fabs)
- EMT simulation experience on PSCAD and HIL experience on RTDS
- Experienced in integrating PCS at Medium Voltage for microgrids
- Knowledge of grid interconnection standards (IEEE 1547, UL 1741-SA/SB) and BESS safety (NFPA 855, UL 9540)
Compensation
The annual base salary range for this position in California is $150,000-$220,000. Salary is only one part of Verrus’ comprehensive compensation package, which also includes a discretionary bonus, equity, general health benefits and paid time off. Compensation is determined by multiple factors, including market location, and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
